But how tall will she get? While you're uncertain about how your baby will turn out, height is a factor that you can estimate to some degree even when she's little. How can you tell your baby's height? Read on to learn more.

Your kiddo's height is dependent on a couple of factors, including genetics. Heredity is the most significant influence on how tall your baby will be, accounting for 80% of your child's height. Head of the pediatric endocrine ward, Lynne Levitsky, M.D., at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, tells Parents that your family tree can help you figure your baby's future potential. If both you and your partner are tall, then the chances are that your child might be the tallest one in kindergarten. If you're both unusually short, then your kids probably will be too.

According to Parents, here's how to estimate your baby's height:

  • Predicting boy height: Add 5 inches to mom's height, keep dad's height constant. A boy born to a mom who is 5'1" and a dad who is 6'0" will likely grow to be between 5'6" and 6'0"
  • Predicting girl height: Subtract 5 inches from dad's height and keep mom's height constant. The daughter of the parents above would grow to be between 5'1" and 5'7".

There are also other ways to estimate your child's height, as seen on Baby Center, including doubling his height when he's three years old.

Other Factors That Influence Your Child's Height

Genetics is the top influence on how tall your baby becomes. Still, a lot of other factors come into play, including:

Gender

According to the Centre for Disease Control, the typical American male is 5.5 inches taller than the average American female.

Nutrition

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, eating really poorly or not having enough to eat, particularly within the first 1000 days of life, can make your child deficient in the nutrients and vitamins needed to grow. According to What to Expect, this can permanently stunt the child's growth, decreasing their height.

Smoking While Pregnant

If a woman smokes during any trimester of pregnancy, there's a chance that the height of the baby they're expecting will be reduced.

Exercise

Being physically active regularly promotes growth. It strengthens the muscles and bones. Beware of high impact sports, including running and gymnastics, since they can lower growth and cause trauma to growing bones when done excessively.

Sleep

Approximately 70 to 80% of the growth hormone is released during sleep. So, make sure that your kid gets enough sleep.

Medical Conditions

Some kids are born with or develop medical conditions that can hinder growth if not treated. They include gastrointestinal disorders, including thyroid problems, celiac disease, hormone deficiency, food allergies, liver, kidney, or heart ailments, and particular chromosomal disorders such as Turner syndrome. Also, monitor closely the medications you give your child for common childhood conditions since some stimulants, including Ritalin, have been found to have an impact on growth.
