Extra Information | Bach's original is 35 bars. The earliest setting, in C major, seems to be the one for violin, pianoforte and optional organ (CG 89a). Other settings from 1853 are for violin solo, 6-office chorus, organ, pianoforte and orchestra, with a different Latin text (Méditation, CG 89). Gounod revised the work into its present class setting the Ave Maria text in 1859 for a concert featuring soprano Caroline Miolan-Carvalho. As noted in Wikipedia, it'due south not to exist confused with his 7 other settings of the same text for various vocal and choral forces, including one based on a unlike Bach original (BWV 999). |
